Welcome back from Lister

Welcome back to Lister’s Lowdown and a Happy New Year to you all!  As the teams all prepare for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament, I take a moment to look at the recent CAF Player of the Year Yaya Toure, as well as a few other influential Ivorian players.
After having a great season at Manchester City, Yaya has continued to hold the Elephants’ midfield together during international matches.  A major benchmark of his Manchester City career was scoring in both the semi-final and final of the FA Cup, which City went on to win last season.  Yaya leads a controlled and skillful midfield, while creating chances and breaking down the opposition’s attack.
Some other players which have stood out so far for their clubs, and who will hopefully make an impact and take the Elephants to a second Afcon victory:
Gervinho has exploded into the Premier League and his club Arsenal.  The Gunners are certainly benefiting from his fast pace and dribbling.  He has partnered well with Robin Van Persie and is definitely one to watch at the tournament.
Cheick Tiote has had a great season so far at Newcastle and continues to control the midfield stopping force.  His team missed him during a spell on the sidelines due to knee damage, and have subsequently dropped down to 7th in the Premier League, but his class was shown last night against Manchester United.
Having recently won the Russian Premier League Player of the Year playing for CSKA Moscow, Seydou Doumbia has proven himself at domestic level.  He has helped his club progress through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, now let’s see him do some damage upfront for the Elephants!
Of course there are a number of other big names in the team including Eboue, Tiene, Boka, Keita, Romaric and of course the mighty Didier Drogba aka The Drog.
Over the coming weeks I will be analyzing the squad, tactics, group, game plans, strategies and team news leading up to kick off on the 22nd January against Sudan.
Come on the Elephants!
