Lister’s Lowdown: Odds, odds, and more odds

Yes, I’m a betting man, so it’s time to have a look at the bookmaker’s odds for AFCON 2012, in particular, Ivory Coast.  According to Bet365 (a great betting website: www.bet365.com) the Elephants are favourites to win outright at 2.62, which doesn’t surprise me too much.  Ghana are second at 5.00 followed by Senegal at 6.50.  Morocco follow priced at 8.50 and Tunisia at 11.00.  That’s positive news for Ivory Coast as this clearly shows that they have a strong chance of walking away with the cup.  The real threats are Ghana, Senegal and Morocco.  I wouldn’t rule out Mali though as the surprise outsiders this year.  When it comes to bets and predictions, I have learned that the bookmakers usually have it about right, with some exceptions of course!
Looking more closely at Ivory Coast’s first match against Sudan, I notice the market again reflects the bookie’s confidence in the team with a price of 1.22 for a win at 90 minutes.  The draw is marked at 6.00 and Sudan to win at 13.00 – very much in our favour, especially with that price for the win!  Perhaps a safety banker?
The top 6 anytime goal scorers for the same match are listed: Drogba at 1.72, Doumbia and Gervinho at 2.10, Wilfried, Kalou, Ya Konan all at 2.25, and Keita at 2.75.  I would say the first three names are pretty much would you would expect, but am surprised to see Wilfried and Kalou in the list.  I really think if Keita gets a start a bet on him scoring might very well pay off!
Now onto the overall top goalscorer odds for AFCON.  Great news for Drogba – he is the favourite at a price of 6.00.  Followed by Gyan at 6.50 and Ba at 7.00.  Kalou is next at 12.00 followed by Senegalese strikers Niang and Cisse at 15.00 and 17.00.  That’s good news for Newcastle fans!
Throughout the cup I will keep a close eye on the odds and hopefully make some good calls.  In my opinion it’s worth putting some money on us to win it outright, or wait until the knockout rounds for bigger bets.  I will continue to update the odds summaries and successful bets made!  Just another reason to say….come on the Elephants!
