Shanghai Shenua’s fans’ warm welcome for Didier Drogba is the main story in the Ivorian sporting news. “Soir Info” says a jubilant crowd was awaiting the Elephants’ captain at the airport as he was due to be presented to fans. “L’Inter” adds that the former Chelsea striker was given a hero’s welcome on his arrival in China. The article’s author says hundreds of Shenua’s fans greeted the former Chelsea star at the airport, some wearing “Drogba 11” shirts and others brandishing placards with his name in English. Drogba told journalist that his move to China is not linked to money issues: ‘Really, I didn’t come here with the idea of making a lot of money. I come here because it is a completely different challenge from what I have seen in Europe before’.
“Notre Voie” says that contrary to what people could think, the current top scorer of the century has not gone to China for sightseeing, but to give boost to the Chinese Super League and help to improve relations between Africa and China. ‘I am looking forward to a new challenge and to experiencing a new culture, and I am excited about the new developments in the Chinese league. I also hope to help promote Chinese football around the world and further improve links between China and Africa’, he explained. Drogba scored 157 goals in 341 appearances at Stamford bridge and played a key role in Chelsea’s triumph in the champions League last May. He joined Chelsea from Marseille in 2004
Elsewhere, “Nord Sud” says that the predecessor to Sidy Diallo, chairman of the Ivorian Football Federation is set to take part in the race for the top job of the African Football Confederation. Jacques Anouma took control of the federation in 2002 and is member of Fifa executive committee.
