AFCON 2013 – Checking In

Chris Lister's Lowdown

Wow – another year has passed and here we go again – this time in South Africa! As the build-up starts, let’s take a minute and look at Les Elephants’ Group. Tunisia, Algeria and Togo join Ivory Coast in Group D.

Les Elephants sit firm favourites to win the group with odds of 1.33, which strongly favours victory! Algeria are second favourites at 6.00, followed by Tunisia at 6.50, and Togo at 21.00. Although Les Elephants are clear favourites, anything can happen in cup football! All teams in Group D are experienced in playing at big competitions, so Les Elephants need to start strongly in order to secure pole position in the group.

I think this really is the “Golden Generation’s” last throw of the dice in terms of winning AFCON. I am particularly interested in seeing Seydou Doumbia and Max Gradel take a more active role in the team this time round. Of course all eyes will be on Yaya Toure, Cheick Tiote, Solomon Kalou and ex-Chelsea star Didier Drogba to lead the team to victory.

In my next article I will assess possible lineups and strategies I feel will push Les Elephants’ chances of exploiting other teams and capitalizing on homegrown talent. I do hope coach Lamouchi takes the boys all the way this year, as last year was pure heartbreak at the end of a dramatic penalty shootout. Come on Les Elephants!
